ERIC & DEREK TALK DUMB AND DUMBERER - 2003
Posted by Gwen in Online articles (2003) on 30 Aug 2008 || Read more...
June 11, 2003 - Two things become apparent upon meeting Derek Richardson and Eric Christian Olsen, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd's titular duo. First of all, Richardson is a dead ringer for a young Jeff Daniels, shy smile and all. Secondly, Olsen...well, Olsen looks absolutely nothing like Jim Carrey or even Jim Carrey playing Lloyd Christmas, the bowl-cut-wearing goofball from the first Dumb and Dumber.

The pair is chatting with reporters at a recent press event in Beverly Hills, and Olsen takes the opportunity to explain how he transformed his blond, surfer boy physique into the character. "I walked in there [to audition], and they were like, 'Who are you and why are you here?'" he remembers. "I had just come off another job – I was doing a show on FOX called 24. I was in the best shape of my life, I was surfing, like, every day and working out and [I had] long, blond hair. I went back, like, four or five times, and [director] Troy [Miller] believed in me... When [Derek and I] read together, the chemistry was there, the energy was there. I dropped 13 pounds in two weeks, dyed my hair brown."
ERIC SURPRISES HIMSELF WITH D&D ROLE - 2003

Eric Christian Olsen sat squirming in the leather chair. He knew he could do the role Jim Carrey first performed so hilariously in Dumb and Dumber, but he didn't look anything like him. Would the film's makers even consider him for the role?

As he sat waiting to go into the producer and director's office, he began talking to himself. It went something like this: "I had to use the research I had, and my textbook was the original film?. I wanted to have Carrey's nuances and mannerisms down, so I could give the best performance possible. When the studio saw me, they agreed," Olsen said with pride. "I was a ringer for Carrey."
ERIC & DEREK TALK DUMB AND DUMBERER - 2003

The prequel to the 1994 Jim Carrey/Jeff Daniels buddy comedy, "Dumb and Dumber," "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd" takes place while the twosome are tackling what they refer to as ‘the big show’ (also known as high school).

Despite "Dumb and Dumber’s" box office appeal and success on video, it wasn’t until writer Robert Brener came up with the idea of taking the two main characters back to their formative years that the idea of revisiting Harry and Lloyd came to fruition. "Everyone remembers certain kids in high school who didn’t fit in because they were just a little different from the norm. Harry and Lloyd don't fit in for every reason. They do everything wrong and the beauty of that is they are completely oblivious to it all," explains Brener.
ERIC AT THE BRUCE ALMIGHTY PREMIERE - 2003

Eric Christian Olsen has the very difficult task of trying to walk in Jim Carrey's shoes. Olsen plays the younger version of "Dumb and Dumber's" Lloyd, the role originally played by Carrey in the 1994 Farrelly Bros. hit comedy.

Olsen flew in from New York to attend the World Premiere of Carrey's "Bruce Almighty" just to get a chance to meet the man himself. Here's what Olsen had to say about imitating Carrey's style and Olsen also provides a brief preview of what to expect from "Dumb and Dumberer."
ERIC & DEREK: NOT THAT DUMBERER - 2003
Posted by Gwen in Online articles (2003) on 30 Aug 2008 || Read more...
It takes a lot of cajones to step into the shoes of comedy legend Jim Carrey and respected actor Jeff Daniels, the original Dumb and Dumber duo, but two young guys were game to try and they told us all about it. Eric Christian Olsen, who plays the young Lloyd in Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, had a starring role on the Fox series “Get Real” and was seen in The Hot Chick, Pearl Harbor and Not Another Teen Movie as well as in several t.v. guest-starring roles. Derek Richardson, who plays Harry, had a recurring role on the WB’s “Felicity” and shots on “Law and Order” and Comedy Central after his theater experience.
THE BOYS OF DUMB & DUMBERER - 2003

Eric Christian Olsen and Derek Richardson take over the roles originated by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels respectively in the prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. Playing the young versions of characters already established was the first challenge both actors had when they began filming.

Olsen said, "I think that the key to this on is, you study, the original film. You watch it like 30 times, and figure out the mannerisms, the nuances, and the elements, and you take that, which you essentially do an impersonation, throw it all away, and be that character, and find the reverse art to that and begin the evolution of those characters. I'm sucha huge fan, and I know he is too, of the first film and what those guys did with the first film, which is one of the best comedies of that past ten years. If not, the best funny comedy of the past ten years, and do justice to that. Those guys are geniuses, and we got to give props to the opportunity that we have."
