Chat transcript from TeenHollywood.com on November 21, 1999
stubby_me: Hey Eric, love the show, how old are you?
ECO: On the show I'm 16. I'm a little older in real life -- I'm a junior at College, so you can probably figure out how old I am!
SweetKissez_98: are you seeing anyone?
ECO: No, I'm actually single right now!
PUMPKINHEAD_32: ERIC WHERE DO YOU SHOP???
ECO: As far as shopping goes, I don't really go.. I shop like a guy! :-) I fly through the store and pick out whatever I want. I usually shop at Banana Republic, Diesel.. Any place that has cool, comfortable clothing!
curlylocks_18: Hey Eric, are you anything like the character you portray on Get Real?
ECO: Yeah, I totally am. There's a lot of me that is like Cameron. He's got a huge heart, he cares about his family. It's a normal relationship with brothers and sisters -- he's mean to his brothers and sisters (I have a brother in real life), but he really loves them. Cameron loves girls, I love girls!!
manolis_varnassinger: eric did you always wanted to act?
ECO: I changed what I wanted to do about 3000 times! I did the "I want to be a fireman" to "I want to be a Navy Seal".. Acting is something that I've always liked, though. Right now I'm a pre-med at University, so if acting doesn't work out, I'd love to be a doctor.
amanda_the_jucket: Who is your favorite cast member?
ECO: Jessie and Anne and I hang around a lot on set. They're the coolest people. We just laugh for 16 hours a day when we're on set. When we have scenes with the whole family, the directors are screaming at us because all we do is laugh and make up lines. Except for Luna.. we had a dog in the pilot, but I don't know what happened to it because we don't have it anymore. I'm not sure what happened to our dog.. hmm...
Jacqui_02: who is your favorite band?
ECO: I have so many different favorite bands. I'm going to have to go with... In my CD player right now, I have the new Dr. Dre album.. I love Filter, Bush. I just met 'N Sync on Friday night. I like all music but country. Anything but country, I'll listen to. And no Kenny G stuff...
im_going_crazy101184: what's your favorite thing to do on your off time?
ECO: I love to go surfing! Any time that I have a morning off, I cruise out the beach with my surfboard. It's just me, the waves and the sun, out in the middle of the Ocean. It's very peaceful. It's a contrast to the crazy L.A. world... And you get tanned! Thanks Heather, that's cute!
laurynw99: what do you look for in a girl?
ECO: I totally fall for the beautiful girl with the cute smile and the sense of humor!
soccerguitarguy: do you play guitar?
ECO: I've tried... I'm really pathetic at it. When I was little, I played sports non-stop and my mom tried to make me learn guitar.
Jacqui_02: what is the craziest thing a fan has ever done to meet you?
ECO: That's a really good question! I went to an event a few weeks ago where there were TONS of fans outside this fundraiser.. I signed autographs outside before I went in and there were thousands of people outside. These four girls had waited like FOUR hours to meet me on the way out. That was so sweet! I've had a lot of crazy experiences with fans, but it's great to have that kind of support from fans!
Jacqui_02: what actors do you look up to?
ECO: Good question! I really like Edward Norton's work.. Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins.. River Phoenix. DiCaprio is really good. His new movie "The Beach" is a really cool flick I never get to see "Get Real" because I'm always working!! I love all the people on "The Practice". I think that's my favorite show on TV right now.
Jacqui_02: what do you want to do on December 31st 1999?
ECO: I'm going on a vacation for 6 days with like 30 of my friends. We're not entirely sure we're going to make it through Y2K because I'll be stranded.
Tiffu7: boxer or briefs?
ECO: Totally boxers!! Remember, fashion is comfort! You can tell on the show, though! I lift up my shirt and you can see that I'm wearing boxers.
Jacqui_02: do you have a pet?
ECO: I've got a dog named "Tasha". It's a huge polar bear. Actually not a real polar bear... a dog. But she's big!! She's back in Iowa though. There's no way I'd have her in my appartment.. that dog is bigger than my appartment!!
Jacqui_02: what advice would you give to aspiring actors?
ECO: That's such a tough question... I guess the biggest thing would be to never give up. There are so many people who work for years and years, trying to figure out what they're going to do and one day they get their break. It's such a tough business and there is SO much rejection. You'll go to 200 auditions and you'll book 1 commercial. It's such a tough business and you have to maintain self-respect outside of that because you're going to get the rejection from acting because it's so hard. Hang in there. When you don't get the part, it has nothing to do with your acting skills or you personally. Two days ago I was in Iowa, driving around in a 1974 Volvo.. if you just believe in yourself, follow your dreams and take chances..
just_like_joey_potter_15f: if you weren't acting what could you see yourself doing?
ECO: If I wouldn't have broken my leg playing hockey, I'd still be playing. I'd be putting all my time and energy into hockey. Hopefully, I'd be playing college level hockey. I have no idea what I'd be doing.. I have no idea what I'm doing now!!!! It's the smallest decisions in life that lead you down the road of life. Coming out to L.A. totally changed the path I'm taking in life..
Jacqui_02: what do your family and friends think of you being famous?
ECO: I try to make things no different with them.. My friends go off to work at their jobs and I go to Fox Studios, but nothing's really changed. They think it's cool to see me on TV, but nothing else has changed. They're unbelievably supportive! To be completely honest.. the best part is the interaction with the fans. When you're working and shooting, it's a job.. But when you do chats like this from TeenHollywood.com and Yahoo! Chat, that is really what I enjoy. When you do a scene, it's in the camera and you don't know how it affects people. Then you get letters from people telling about how much our work impacts people's lives. It's just amazing. Whenever I get fan mail from Fox, I ALWAYS send out a headshot and I sign it. I take a lot of time doing that because I think it's so very important!
TeenHollywood_Host: That's all folks!
ECO: Thanks for coming everyone! Hopefully we can do this again sometime and I'll answer some more questions.
